Kigali: The top four teams from last season’s Azam Rwanda Premier League are set to compete in this year’s UBUTWARI tournament, which is scheduled from January 25 to February 1 at Kigali Stadium.
The tournament is co-organised by The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) and The Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO) in order to celebrate Heroes’Day, an annual event aimed at paying tribute to people who exemplified and defended the highest values of patriotism and sacrifice for the wellbeing of the country and its citizens.
The four teams include; league champions Rayon Sports, APR FC, who finished second, third-placed MUKURA VS and Police FC.
The tournament will be played on robin round format with all four participating teams playing each other, On its first match day, January 25, Rayon Sports will play against Police, while APR will be up against Mukura VS. The second match day which is slated on January 28 will see APR play against Police while Rayon Sports face Mukura VS.
On Match Day three due on January 28, 2020, women league champions Scandinavia WFC will face rivals and second-placed AS Kigali WFC before the two RDF teams (yet to be known) take on each other vying for the champions’ slot.
On the last match day of the tournament, February 1, which is also the National Heroes Day, Police FC will take on Mukura VS, whereas holders APR will play against archrivals Rayon Sports.
The tournament winners will be determined in consideration of the tie-breaking rules included in the tournament regulations namely points tally and goal difference.
The winner of the UBUTWARI tournament will get Rwf 6,000,000 on top of the trophy and gold medals, second place side will earn Rwf 3,000,000; the bronze medalist will walk away with Rwf 2,000,000. while the fourth-placed team will take home Rwf 1,000,000.
The winning team in the women category will pocket Rwf 2,000,000, while the losing finalist will pocket Rwf. 1,000,000 while The winning RDF team will earn Rwf. 1,000,000 on top of a trophy while the losing finalists will earn Rwf. 500, 000.
APR FC won last year’s edition with six points, one ahead of first runners-up AS Kigali dethroning their rivals Rayon Sports who had won the previous edition of 2018. (End)
