France is concerned over the ongoing blockade in Guergarat, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean Yves Le Drian, said on Monday, November 09,2000 in Rabat.
France is following the events in Guergarat with attention, Mr. Le Drian pointed out at a joint press briefing with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, at the end of their talks, stressing that “we must get out of this situation”.
In this regard, Mr. Le Drian commended the sense of responsibility displayed by Morocco.
The French FM also reiterated France’s “consistent” position supporting the search for a “just, lasting and mutually agreed” solution to the Sahara issue, under the aegis of the UN.
“I have reminded Mr. Bourita of France’s consistent position in support of the search for a just, lasting and mutually agreed solution under the aegis of the United Nations, in accordance with Security Council resolutions, which deem the Moroccan autonomy plan as a serious and credible basis for a negotiated solution,” he said.
For his part, Mr. Bourita said that the meeting with his French counterpart was an opportunity to give him an overview of the evolution of the Sahara issue, particularly following the adoption of the new resolution of the UN Security Council.
