Deputy Speaker Edda Mukabagwiza

The Deputy Speaker of Rwanda Parliament, Edda Mukabagwiza, is among leaders of parliaments from the Commonwealth attending a week-long conference in Canberra, Australia.

The 26th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) is being hosted by the Parliament of Australia from 3-6 January 2023. It brings together the Speakers and Presiding Officers – Clerks and their technical teams – of national parliaments of the sovereign states of the Commonwealth.

Deputy Speaker Edda Mukabagwiza has shared experiences of Rwanda in dealing with Covid-19 and how it has changed the way Parliament used to operate and different mitigation measures put in place to prevent Covid-19 in the Rwandan  Parliament.

The 26th CSPOC is discussing among other issues, Parliamentarians and the Pandemic, Security, the role of Presiding Officers in parliamentary innovation and E-Parliament.

This year’s conference attracts more than 120 delegates including parliamentary staff, and observers from 32 Commonwealth Parliaments. The first conference was held in 1969 as an initiative of the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Lucien Lamoureux.

The CSPOC is an independent group and has no formal affiliation with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Commonwealth Secretariat or the Commonwealth Heads of Government. (End)
