On the sidelines of the AU Executive Council meeting, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vincent Biruta signed an MOU on the establishment of a Joint Permanent Commission with Ghana.
“This agreement will help enhance the good bilateral relationship between Rwanda and Ghana”, according to Rwandan diplomacy.
Minister Vincent Biruta is in Addis Ababa for the 42nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
Rwanda-Ghana cooperation dates back to several decades. In 1994, this cooperation reached a crescendo when the Ghanaian contingent under the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIL) against orders from the UN stayed in Rwanda and helped saved several lives during the 1994 Genocide- the darkest period in the life of Rwanda.
Since then, Rwanda and Ghana have enhanced their relationship and cooperated on several fronts. Today, the bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Ghana is centered on Trade and Business, Education and Tourism as well as Security.
To cement and streamline the cooperation between Rwanda and Ghana, Vincent Biruta and Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway in November 2020 signed a General Cooperation (GCA) agreement. Besides the GCA, efforts are currently underway to sign other agreements to further streamline and deepen relations between the two countries. (End)
