President Kagame joins East African Community (EAC) Chair President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, host President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, President William Ruto of Kenya, Vice President Prosper Bazombanza of Burundi, and EAC Secretary-General Veronica Nduva for the opening of the 24th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State coinciding with the bloc’s 25th Anniversary.
EAC is celebrating its Silver Jubilee (25th Anniversary) on 30 November 2024, at its headquarters in Arusha.
This historic milestone marks a quarter-century since the signing of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC on November 30, 1999, by the founding Partner States—Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
To celebrate the EAC Silver Jubilee, – a week-long series of activities including exhibitions and seminars- , has been planned culminating in the EAC Summit of the Heads of State.
Over the past 25 years, the EAC has expanded its membership to eight Partner States–Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia.
The Community has achieved significant progress in regional integration, particularly through its key pillars: The Customs Union, Common Market, Monetary Union and the ultimate goal of Political Federation.
The celebrations of the EAC’s Silver Jubilee will continue until 30th June, 2025 with a number of activities outlined at both the national and regional levels.
In 1996, Rwanda showed interest to join the East African Community and officially joined the EAC in 2007. (End)
