US Public Health Entry Screening Ends for Air Passengers from Rwanda

On December 4, 2024, at 11:59 PM EST, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ended the redirection of U.S.-bound air passengers from Rwanda to three U.S. airports and the public health entry screening of travelers to the United States who have been in Rwanda in the past 21 days.

Passengers are now able to arrive in the United States without being redirected to one of the three designated airports where public health entry screening was previously conducted.

This decision follows the November 22, 2024, downgrade of the Rwanda Travel Advisory from Level 3 to Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), and the discharge of the last known patient with the Marburg Virus Disease in Rwanda, who tested negative on November 8, 2024.

The World Health Organization announced that Rwanda had started the 42-day countdown to declare the end of the outbreak. With no new cases reported, the U.S. Government will work to ensure a smooth transition and continued public health safety. (End)
