
Minister of Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe held a productive call with Ambassador Troy Fitrell, Acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.
Their discussion focused on further strengthening bilateral relations between Rwanda and the U.S, the current situation in the Eastern DRC, the positive outcome of the joint EAC-SADC Summit and finding a sustainable path to peace in the region.
The joint summit by the Southern African bloc, SADC, and the East African Community (EAC) was held in Tanzania on Saturday, following the offensive of the March 23 Movement (M23) in two provinces in eastern DRC.
Since the beginning of the year, the rebels have seized several towns in North Kivu, including Goma, the capital of the province, located on the Rwandan border. The armed group is currently advancing along Lake Kivu towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, from which it is said to be just a few dozen kilometres away. (End)
