Police urges schools and transport agencies to ensure safe travel for students going home for holidays

Holiday for students in primary and secondary schools, marking the end of the second term, will commence this Friday, April 4, when students will be returning to their respective homes.

Rwanda National Police (RNP) urges schools and transport agencies to assist in the safe and incident free movement of students as they begin their holidays.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Kayigi emphasized the importance of close coordination of school administrations and transporters to ensure that students leave their schools and arrive in their respective homes early.

He stressed the need for early distribution of academic reports enabling students to travel home on time.

“We urge school authorities to facilitate the early release of students, which goes with ensuring they receive their academic reports on time to avoid unnecessary delays. When students are dressed in school uniform, it becomes easy to be identified and given priority when boarding buses,” SP Kayigi said.

He urged drivers to adhere to the principles of Gerayo Amahoro; remain disciplined on the road, follow all safety guidelines including regulating speed, not using the phone and overloading, when driving, to prevent accidents.

“We remind drivers to avoid anything that can bring any harm to students. Safety of students and passengers in general is their priority,” SP Kayigi emphasized.

He further urged students to use the holidays for productive activities and not to engage in any lawlessness such as drug abuse and alcoholism as they pose long-standing negative consequences related to health and their future. (end)
