A two-week ‘advanced public health training’ for law enforcement and personnel from public health and consumer protection institutions, opened on Monday, November 14, at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters at Kacyiru.
The course facilitated by experts from the Italian Carabiniere Command for the Protection of Health, brings together 45 participants from RNP, RIB, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Rwanda Forensic Laboratory (RFL), Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA) and Rwanda Standards Board (RSB).
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, while opening the training, said that it was designed to support government institutions to build their capacity in public health protection.
“This course will equip the participants with the necessary knowledge, technics and skills to plan, analyze, and inspect the activities pertaining to the development of standards, conformity assessment and sharing information on counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals and consumer products,” DIGP Ujeneza said.
She reiterated the need for them to upgrade their understanding and operating standards towards protection of public health.
During the course of the training, participants will look at pharmaceutical crimes and security, pharma and food sector checklist for inspectors, legislations and rules against fraud.
They will also visit hospitality facilities and hotel pharmacies for simulation.
The Deputy Police Chief lauded the existing strong practical cooperation between RNP and Carabiniere.
Lt. Col. Eduardo Campora from the Carabinieri of Italy, said that this training is among many others that signify the existing good cooperation between the two Police institutions.
The cooperation pact between RNP and Carabinieri signed in 2017, highlights partnership in capacity development such as peace support operations, counter-terrorism, aviation security, public order management, VIP protection, cybercrime, traffic and road safety, public health and environmental protection, among others.
