Kigali: Rwanda National Police (RNP) has warned of severe actions to whoever will be caught misusing the granted privilege to operate in this period when the government is fighting the spread of Coronavirus.
The caution comes after three journalists were detained on Friday for using their position to visit and engage in drinking.
“Early morning on Friday, Police arrested two journalists driving while drunk; it was established that they had spent a night at their colleague’s place drinking,” Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera said.
“Whereas journalists are allowed to continue their essential duties in this period, these three individuals misused their privileges and violated the directives put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.”
CP Kabera emphasized that people or institutions authorised to continue providing essential services in this period, also have to follow certain directives such as social distancing at work, social visits and events are prohibited.
“Authorised vehicles are required to exclusively transport authorised people, those who misuse roads passes and provide lifts to others are cautioned against this prohibited act, which is punishable.” He said.
“You can drink from your house, that’s okay; but it’s prohibited to visit a friend and more so going there for social acts.”
“Besides going to work, if you are permitted, you can only leave your home for other essential services like medical, food and banking. Using your privilege to violate government directives will not be tolerated and will call for immediate appropriate action, including arrest.”
CP Kabera appreciated those who obey the directives. But there are others who have been waiting for enforcement measures to be effected. He urges all Rwandans to stay at home as they protect themselves and others. (End)
