Defence Attachés accredited to Rwanda listen to testimonies of FDLR Ex-Combatants

Musanze: Defence Attachés accredited to Rwanda today visited the Mutobo Demobilisation and Reintegration Centre and listened to testimonies from FDLR Ex-Combatants who recently surrendered themselves to Rwandan authorities.

The delegation was welcomed by the Defence Spokesperson, Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga who interpreted the testimonies that highlighted among other things the reasons behind the defections, citing disillusionment resulting from FDLR’s harmful ideology as the central factor behind the defections.

The ex-combatants disclosed details about the military alliances involving the FDLR, DRC forces (FARDC), Burundian troops, and the Wazalendo rebel coalition. They revealed that these groups fought alongside each other, with DRC leaders providing military equipment to the coalition.

The Mutobo Demobilisation and Reintegration Centre serves as a crucial institution for reintegrating former combatants into Rwandan society.

According to Rtd Major Mudeyi Cyprien, the Centre Manager, surrendered combatants undergo a discharge orientation programme, including a three-month civic education course. They are also equipped with practical skills to enable them to reintegrate into society.

The visit aimed to enhance the Defence Attachés’ understanding of the complexities surrounding armed groups in the area.(End)
