On Wednesday, July 3, at about 7:30a.m. the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Fire and Rescue Brigade responded to a fire distress call in Makuza Peace Plaza in the Central Business District. The fire had broken out in one section of the first floor.
The RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, said: “The Fire and Rescue Brigade responded swiftly and managed to put out the fire before spreading to other parts of the floor and building. All people were evacuated safely with no harm and experts are still establishing the cause of the fire.”
The fire affected three shops dealing in electronics, spectacles and curtains, operating in the affected section of the building.
“We call upon owners of buildings, tenants and the general public to always take precautionary measures against fire, avoid any reckless practices that can lead to fire emergency and promptly call the Fire and Rescue Brigade to contain the situation and to prevent destruction of property and loss of lives,” ACP Rutikanga said.
