As we start the new year, Rwanda National Police (RNP) urges road users to make road safety culture part of their resolutions to stay safe and to save others.
The public is reminded to be part of the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro road safety campaign to further influence change and to make roads safer for all.
These are some of the messages that were delivered to various categories of road users in different parts of the country, on Thursday, January 4.
Gerayo Amahoro campaign was held in the districts of Muhanga, Ruhango, Nyamagabe, Musanze and Rusizi where pedestrians, taxi-moto operators, and cyclists were urged to prioritize their safety on the road by respecting traffic regulations.
They were reminded to avoid speeding, using a phone when riding or crossing the road, respect zebra crossing, refrain from drunk driving, wrong or dangerous maneuvers, reckless use of road; all of which increase risks of road crashes.
The RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Boniface Rutikanga said Gerayo Amahoro campaign has played a big part in reducing accidents that are caused by human behaviours.
“There has been some impact created by Gerayo Amahoro campaign since it was launched in 2019, although we still see fatal accidents caused by human behaviours.
The idea behind Gerayo Amahoro is to create a society that observes traffic regulations not because it is the law but because its the right choice and culture,” ACP Rutikanga said.
He added: “This is a vigorous campaign that will continue this year to build a society that prioritizes safety.”
