Kigali: At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada will attend Kwibuka25, the 25th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. The visit to Rwanda will demonstrate Canada’s commitment to preventing genocide and mass atrocities as well as to affirm our relations with Rwanda.
Her Excellency arrived on Friday, April 5, 2019, 5:00 pm, from Ottawa accompanied by a delegation of prominent Canadians. During the visit, the Governor General will tour The Gisozi Genocide Memorial on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 10:40 am. Her Excellency will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Canada to honour the more than 800,000 victims – Tutsis, moderate Hutus, and others. Her Excellency will also visit the museum.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Through education and peace-building, it honours the memory of the more than one million Rwandans who were killed in 1994. (End)
