Kagame receives Gabonese President Bongo

Kigali: President Paul Kagame, as the Chairperson of the African Union on Tuesday received his counterpart from Gabon and Chairperson of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Ali Bongo Ondimba, who traveled to Kigali for a one-day working visit.

The two Heads of States discussed mainly on the revitalization of the Economic Community of Central African States. In addition to this, the two Presidents took the opportunity to exchange on security and political matters in the region. During the bilateral meeting they have committed to work closely for a sustainable development of the region and the continent.

Although Rwanda was one of the founding members of ECCAS in 1981, it withdrew its membership in 2007, and rejoined the community in August 2016.

Currently the block has eleven members including; Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Rwanda and Sao Tome & Principe. The main objectives of the ECCAS include supporting the process of economic cooperation and integration of Central African States. (End)
