HM King Mohammed VI chaired a working session on the revision of the Family Code

On Monday, King Mohammed VI of Morocco chaired a working session at the Royal Palace in Casablanca focused on revising the Family Code. This significant reform aims to better address the evolving dynamics of Moroccan families while balancing tradition with modernity. The initiative builds upon the reforms initiated in 2004.

During the meeting, Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi outlined the methodology adopted by the body, while Ahmed Toufiq, Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, presented the conclusions of the Council of Ulemas (Council of Muslim Scholars). The discussions highlighted Morocco’s use of Ijtihad, a process of religious interpretation, to provide innovative solutions for contemporary family issues.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who is also Amir Al-Mouminine (Commander of the Faithful), emphasized the fundamental principles guiding the reform of Morocco’s Family Code. The Sovereign stated that the reform must uphold the core tenets of Islam, particularly justice, equality, and solidarity, while also integrating universal values as outlined in international conventions ratified by Morocco. His Majesty the King highlighted the necessity of a balanced approach to ensure that no single party is favored at the expense of another, guaranteeing the rights and responsibilities of all family members.

The Monarch stressed the importance of drafting clear and accessible legal texts to prevent any contradictory interpretations by Moroccan courts. He reaffirmed the primacy of the family unity and called for significant reforms to the Family Code aimed at strengthening women’s rights and promoting children’s best interests. The reform seeks to modernize legislative texts, consolidate advancements in family justice, and raise citizens’ awareness of their rights and obligations.

This initiative illustrates Morocco’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable society. By placing the family at the heart of its priorities, the Kingdom is once again demonstrating its ability to harmonize respect for tradition with contemporary developments.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI has also charged the Head of Government and the Ministers concerned to keep the public informed about the progress of this reform. The validated proposals will be presented to the Moroccan Parliament in the upcoming months for discussion and approval, in accordance with constitutional provisions.

This session marks a crucial milestone in the evolution of the Family Code, aimed at ensuring balanced legal, social, and economic protection for all members of Moroccan families while preserving essential societal values.
