Mr. Isao Fukushima, Ambassador of Japan to Rwanda, and Mr. Nzayisenga Albert, General Director of Rilima Specialized Orthopedic Hospital (RSOH), signed a grant contract for the project for the provision of physical rehabilitation equipment. Under the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP/KUSANONE), the Embassy of Japan will provide USD 71,957 to RSOH and this Project will contribute to the improvement of rehabilitation service of RSOH and to the expansion of the hospital’s capacity to receive the 150 patients currently on the waiting list.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Fukushima put emphasis on the importance of contributing to the health sector which is one of the basic human needs. He welcomed RSOH’s great contribution to the health sector in Rwanda and expected to see a great outcome of the Project. He also explained the concept of Human Security which is core of the development assistance by Japan. Human Security is a concept that advances the nation and community building through Empowerment, Protection and Solidarity of individuals to live happily and in dignity, free from fear and want.
The GGP/KUSANONE is designed on the basis of the concept and the Government of Japan provides grants to NGOs, educational institutions, health institutions and local authorities for their development projects at community level. The Program has 25 years of history in Rwanda in the areas of education, agriculture, water, sanitation as well as health. Ambassador FUKUSHIMA also mentioned that at TICAD 8 in Tunisia last year, the Government of Japan decided to focus on the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for Africa along with Green investment, funding for start-ups and food security. To achieve this global goal, Japan will continue its efforts to support and work with the people at grassroots level in collaboration with the Government of Rwanda as well as NGOs. (End)
