Kigali: President Kagame today received USAID Administrator, Mark Green who is in Rwanda as part of his visit to various countries in Africa including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Mozambique.
Currently, USAID cooperation with Rwanda focuses on agriculture, food security, health and education for a total of $71 million spent this year.
USAID has contributed $32 million to the health sector through Chemonics International Inc. to help ensure access to high quality health commodities with a focus on HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention and treatment.
Through Feed the Future-Rwanda Hinga Weze, USAID has provided $11 million to support small holder farmers to increase their income and the sustainability of their crops. The program operates in ten districts including Bugesera, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Ngoma, Karongi, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Nyamagabe, Nyamasheke and Rutsiro.
Additional projects include Twiyubake housing project also known as the Improved Services for Vulnerable Populations which aims to assist 50,000 vulnerable households in 12 districts ((Muhanga, Kamonyi, Nyaruguru, Nyamagabe, Huye, Ruhango, Rwamagana, Kayonza, Rulindo, Gakenke, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge) as well as Turengere Abana and Gimbuka program which provides support to both students in secondary and primary education respectively.
The President and Mr Green discussed USAID cooperation with Rwanda as well as the institution’s stated intent of shifting relationships with partner states towards productive engagement that leads to ending the need for foreign assistance, a goal which is an integral part of Rwanda’s vision. (End)
