
Rwandan peacekeepers deployed under the UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Central African Republic (MINUSCA) together with the Rwandan community and peacekeepers from other contributing countries, on Monday, April 7, joined the rest of the world to mark the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The commemoration in mission areas was marked by a ‘Walk to Remember’, lighting a ‘Frame of Remembrance’ and a moment of silence to pay tribute to over one million innocent Rwandans massacred in a period of one hundred days, 31 years ago.
In South Sudan, the activities to commemorate were held at Durupi Base Camp in the capital Juba as well as Malakal in Upper Nile State, where Rwanda Formed Police Unit – One (RWAFPU) is deployed. Rwanda maintains two Police contingents in South Sudan.
In Central African Republic, Kwibuka activities were conducted in separate areas where the Rwandan contingents are deployed, including Bangui (RWAFPU1 and RWAPSU) Kaga Bandoro in Mbomou Province (RWAFPU2) and Bangassou city where RWAFPU3 operates. (End)
