The President of the Senate, Kalinda François-Xavier

On April 13th, 2025, Rwanda concluded the commemoration week at national level where the President of the Senate, Kalinda François-Xavier, government officials, dignitaries, families, and friends gathered at Rebero Genocide Memorial to pay respect to politicians who were killed for opposing the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. They also laid wreaths at the resting place of the  politicians and other victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Senate President Dr. Kalinda stated that the commemoration of the politicians who were killed for opposing the genocide against the Tutsis serves as a chance to better understand the historical origins of this tragedy.  It is also a moment for reflection on achievements in rebuilding unity and resilience as a nation, while looking forward to the future of the country.

The  Senate President also condemned politicians who played a role in the genocide against Tutsi: “While commemorating the politicians who committed to deny the injustice and the politics of hate, striving to ensure that Rwanda is not consumed by the darkness of division and discrimination until they are killed, we strongly condemn the politicians who played a role in the planning, incitement, support and implementation of the Genocide against the Tutsi, which killed more than a million in a hundred days.” He said.

Dr. Kalinda urged politicians to reach out  citizens to combat genocide ideology “I urge you [politicians] to take the lead in combating genocide ideology by reaching out to citizens and emphasizing the importance of unity and resilience. It is crucial to educate our youth about our country’s history, particularly the Genocide against the Tutsi, in order to strengthen our unity as Rwandans and foster a sense of patriotism.” He added

The Commemoration week was closed but activities of remembrance of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 will continue for 100 days. (End)
