Launch of Kigali Urban Transport Project and Burundi -Rwanda Integrated Development Project

The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA), in collaboration with the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), is pleased to announce the official launch of the Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI) and Burundi

Rwanda Integrated Development Project (BRIDEP). The launch event takes place today Monday, March 24, 2025 at Serena Hotel in Kigali.

These projects, co-financed by the Government of Rwanda, the African Development Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) among other partners, aim to enhance transport infrastructure, connectivity, and economic growth in Rwanda and the broader East African region.

Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI) approved in December 2024, seeks to improve Kigali’s urban transport infrastructure by upgrading key junctions, promoting Non Motorized Transport (NMT) facilities, and supporting e-mobility initiatives.

The project will commence with the implementation of works at three critical intersections: Chez Lando, Gishushu, and Kicukiro/Sonatubes. This initiative is expected to create approximately 400 temporary jobs during the construction phase, with 30% of these opportunities designated for women.

The Burundi-Rwanda Integrated Development Project (BRIDEP), approved in October 2024, is a regional initiative aimed at enhancing transport and agricultural infrastructure between Rwanda and Burundi to boost economic resilience and regional trade.

With a total financing of USD 413.22 million, the project includes the construction of four asphalt roads totaling 215.3 km, feasibility studies for an additional 406 km of roads, socio-economic impact assessments, and three maritime transport studies to further strengthen cross-border connectivity and development.

Speaking about the objective of this launching event and workshop, Mr. Imena MUNYAMPENDA, Director General of RTDA, stated:

“The objective of this project launch event is to familiarize the program implementation staff of the executing agency and key stakeholders with the African Development Bank (AfDB) rules and procedures related to project financial management, procurement, disbursement, monitoring and evaluation, and share information and discuss the key elements of the program implementation.”

Remarking on the projects, AfDB Country Manager Aissa Touré said:

“The Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project and the Burundi-Rwanda Integrated Development Project are transformative initiatives that align with the African Development Bank’s commitment to promoting regional integration and sustainable urban development. These projects will not only improve transport efficiency and connectivity but also contribute to economic growth and job creation. We are confident that through strong collaboration between the Government of Rwanda, the African Development Bank, and our partners, these projects will have a lasting positive impact on the region.”
