Vincent Biruta, Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, received today Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, UK Minister for the Commonwealth, who is in Kigali on a 2-day official visit.
After a tête-a-tête to exchange on bilateral matters, they had a roundtable with the CHOGM 2021 taskforce to discuss ongoing preparations. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda on 22 – 27 June 2020.
In Kigali, Commonwealth leaders will convene under the overarching theme ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.’ Leaders will be building on CHOGM 2018 outcomes which were inspired by the theme ‘Towards a Common Future’.
CHOGM is customarily held every two years and is the Commonwealth’s highest consultative and policy-making gathering. Commonwealth leaders selected Rwanda as host for their next summit when they met in London in 2018.
The CHOGM was to have been held in Kigali in June 2020 but was postponed because of the impact of COVID-19. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 independent and equal countries. It is home to 2.4 billion people, and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. (End)
