On 21 May 2023, Members of Parliament (Deputies and Senators) joined the citizens of Ruhango and Karongi Districts and their friends to commemorate the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.
A group led by Dr. Kalinda Francois Xavier, President of the Senate, visited the Mubuga Genocide Memorial Site in Karongi District where they learned about the history of the Genocide in that region. Additionally, 27 Tutsi victims of the Genocide had their bodies laid to rest.
Dr Kalinda remarked that although there are still instances of genocide ideology in the region, Rwandans would not tolerate anyone who might be in opposition to the choice of working together.
“The lessons we learn from the history of the Genocide here at Mubuga and everywhere else where we join citizens during the Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, give us a task as parliamentarians to continue sticking to the oath we made of striving for unity among Rwandans,” said Dr Kalinda Francois Xavier.
On the other hand, a group led by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Mukabalisa Donatille, joined the citizens of Ruhango during the Genocide commemoration and paid a visit to the Mayunzwe Genocide Memorial Site.
Speaker Mukabalisa denounced the actions of bad leaders throughout the nation’s history, saying that they encouraged strife and division among Rwandans, which resulted in the devastation of the nation and the deaths of over one million people during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies urged Rwandans to continue resisting evil and to work together to fulfil their duties for the good of the nation. (End)
