MTN Rwanda was among seven corporates that received the Best Large Taxpayer 2021 award from the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), during an event that marked the 20th Taxpayer Appreciation Day at the Kigali Convection Centre.
The Taxpayers’ appreciation day is an annual event organized and hosted by RRA to extend gratitude to esteemed compliant taxpayers and their contribution towards the economic development of the nation.
RRA, the agency responsible for the efficient assessment and collection of revenue (taxes) on behalf of the Government of Rwanda, honored MTN Rwanda for the outstanding contribution to the development of the economy through diligent payment of taxes.
“It is an honor to receive this award. The recognition underscores our astute adherence to corporate governance principles and commitment to the ideals and tenets of economic development. We acknowledge that this recognition of top taxpayer, which we have now won over 15 times in a row, is a result of our commitment to make a difference by supporting the economy through job creation, duties and taxes and meaningful partnerships,” said Mapula Bodibe, MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer.
In FY21, MTN Rwanda paid Rwf67.9 billion in duties and taxes. Over the same period, MTN Rwanda sustained more than 60,000 jobs directly and indirectly and spent more than Rwf300 billion on local suppliers. In the past 5 years, the firms’ cumulative taxes have amounted to more than Rwf239 billion.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner General of Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), Pascal Bizimana Rugenintwali, said that tax compliance rates have improved over the years boosted by the introduction of technology in tax collection and administration.
He noted that other contributing factors include visible development in the country that gives taxpayers the zeal to meet their tax obligations.
