Karongi: Police and investigators in Karongi District, on October 21, intercepted a vehicle that was transporting four sacks of cannabis. The vehicle registration number RAA 603Y, Toyota Coralla type was intercepted at a roadblock mounted in Mucyimba Cell, Rugabano Sector, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western Province, said.

“There was credible information that the same vehicle was loaded with bags of cannabis which had been sneaked into the country through a porous border, and that same night was headed to Kigali,” CIP Gasasira said.

“Rugabano Police station mounted a roadblock in that night, and at about 11pm the same vehicle showed up but the driver refused to stop, knocked the Police barrier in an attempt to flee but the car tyres were punctured by the barricade objects, he stopped in a distance and occupants fled leaving the vehicle with the narcotics behind,” he explained.

The vehicle and the exhibits have since been handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau in Rugabano.

The spokesperson thanked members of the public who tipped the Police which led to foiling of the drug trafficking ring, and called for continued “ownership” and information sharing on drug dealers.

“We already know the owner of the vehicle and we will continue to work with RIB to track and arrest anyone connected to this criminal act,” CIP Gasasira warned. (End)
