Some 109 Police officers donated blood in a voluntary exercise supervised by Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters, Kacyiru.
The blood donors are from different departments and units at the General Headquarters and central region.
It is a periodic voluntary act to support the national blood transfusion as part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between RNP and RBC to boost national blood banks.
The RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, said that the blood donation is in line with the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between RNP and RBC to boost national blood banks.
“This is part of the RNP human security programmes, which combines various aspects of security and development, including health. You cannot say that people are safe and secure when they are sick,” said ACP Rutikanga.
He added : “As a security organ, we are also setting an example not only to ensure the physical security but also the health of the people we serve.”
Thomas Nduwimana from the RBC Blood Transfusion Division in charge of donor selection, thanked Police officers for the humanitarian activity of donating blood.
“Blood donation is the responsibility of every citizen because it is a reciprocal action; you will save someone in need of blood but you might as well one day also need it or your relative. The partnership with Rwanda National Police since 2017 has been effective with the big turn up of officers in their different units across the country,” Nduwimana said.
He brushed off fears and myths that blood donors may develop side effects adding that the body regains the donated blood within eight hours. (End)
