The 2024 Genocide Memorial tournaments started on Friday, May 31, in City of Kigali with Rwanda National Police (RNP) fielding teams in Handball, Volleyball, Taekwondo and Karate categories.
Police Handball Club, who are the defending champions, got off to a winning start by beating Uganda Prisons 33-24 in their opening game, played at Kimisagara Youth Centre.
It was a 15-13 tight first half in favor of the Rwandan law enforcers but the leaders maintained the status quo in the second half as they search for their 7th Genocide Memorial trophy.
Eight handball teams took part in this year’s tournament. They are the defending champions Police HC, APR HC, UR-Rukara, UR-Huye, Gicumbi HC, Nyakabanda HC as well as Prisons and Makerere University, both from Uganda.
Police HC will take on UR-Rukara and UR-Huye in their two matches to be played this Saturday.
Meanwhile, both men and women Police volleyball, Karate and Taekwondo teams will participate in the tournament with games expected to start next week. (End)
