Prime Minister Dr. Edouard Ngirente attended the 3rd South Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 and China taking place in Kampala, Uganda.
The Third South Summit convenes in Uganda today, on the theme, ‘Leaving No One Behind’. Member States of the G77 and China discuss developmental challenges, and ways in which the Group can work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Summit seeks to bring a new dynamic to the cooperation among its 134 member States of the Group of 77 (G-77) in a more competitive world. It aims to boost South-South cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and digital economy, among other areas.
The Second South Summit convened in Doha, Qatar, in 2005. The First South Summit took place in Havana, Cuba, in 2000. In practice with the G-77’s principle of geographic rotation, this Summit is convening in Africa.
G-77+ China started as a group of 77 developing countries that came together and signed a joint declaration of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva in 1964, with a main aim of promoting economic cooperation among its member states and to collectively address issues related to development, trade, and intentional institutions.
These, who have since grown to 134 members, have from 1994 received both political and financial support from China-who does not consider herself a group member. (End)
