President Kagame participates in the 21st COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit

Today, President Kagame joined virtually other leaders from across the African continent for the 21st COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit.

Themed “Building Resilience Through Strategic Digital Economic Integration,” the Summit, held in hybrid format, was hosted by the Government of Egypt and comes three years since the last one held in Lusaka, Zambia in July 2018.

The summit aimed to rally the 21 COMESA member states on how to safeguard and advance their regional integration agenda using digital platforms to facilitate doing business and enhance their resilience in the face of economic repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was an opportunity to review a number of key reports on economic integration priority issues, the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region, the implementation status of regional integration programs, and the medium-term strategic plan.

At the Summit, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt took over the chairmanship of the COMESA Heads of State and Government (also called Authority) from the outgoing chair, President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar.

Rwanda has been a member of the COMESA Free Trade Area since 1st January 2004. Rwanda assumed COMESA Chairmanship from 2005-2006 and hosted COMESA Heads of State and Government in 2006.(End).
