Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame is deeply saddened by the passing of former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank and Labour and Finance Minister Dr Tito Mboweni at the age of 65.
President Kagame offers his condolences to the family and friends of Dr Tito Mboweni who has passed away following a short illness.
President Kagame said: “I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Tito Mboweni, and to President Ramaphosa and the government and people of South Africa.”
“Tito Mboweni was a giant voice for Africa and a champion of continental integration. His counsel was invaluable in the effort of reforming the African Union, and in recent years he dedicated his energy to implementing the reform as chair of the AU Peace Fund. His legacy will live on for generations to come”, President Kagame added via X.
Dr Tito Mboweni was the democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1999 in the Cabinet of Founding President Nelson Mandela.
He served as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank for a decade from 1999 and became the first black African Governor of the South African Reserve Bank.
From 2018 to 2021, Dr Tito Mboweni served as Minister of Finance in the administration led by President Ramaphosa.
The former South African Finance Minister died on Saturday evening surrounded by loved ones, his family said.
During the apartheid years, he was in exile in neighbouring Lesotho from 1980 before returning to South Africa in 1990. (End)
