Kigali: Twenty-seven Police officers from Rwanda National Police (RNP) and South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS), on Friday, ended the three-week aviation security course at the Police General Headquarters in Kacyiru.
The closing ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in Charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda.
DIGP Marizamunda said that aviation is the only rapid transportation network that has enhanced global business by enabling faster and easier movement of people and goods, facilitating international trade and tourism.
To advance the aviation sector and harness its growth potential for the benefit of countries’ economies, he said, safety and security play a vital role.
“We are all aware that terrorism and cybercrimes have emerged as major global threats. The current threat landscape demands that aviation security remains among the highest priorities for our countries,” the Deputy Police Chief said.
He reminded the participants that security incidents have a negative impact on the aviation industry, as they not only result into injuries and loss of lives, but also erode confidence in the airline and disrupt travel and trade.
DIGP Marizamunda added that Airport police units are vital components of the aviation security system.
He emphasized increased Police capabilities to protect the air transport system against act of unlawful interferences for the safety of the people and their goods.
He urged them to put the acquired skills to professional use in order to improve aviation security in their respective countries.
Speaking on behalf of participants, Maj. Charles Chingoth Thok from South Sudan, appreciated RNP leadership for the invitation to attend the training.
“We thank the Government of Rwanda and RNP in particular for their continued support in this domain, we assure you that we are going back home to apply all the fruitful skills we gained here, we will share with our fellow police officers to enhance aviation security at our airports,” Major Charles said.
Inspector of Police (IP) Joseph Bizumuremyi, one of the participants from RNP, said that they have gained knowledge in many aspects of the aviation security industry.
During the training, participants covered civil aviation skills, overview of international civil aviation security, access control of people and vehicles, recognition of explosives and other restricted articles; search procedures; patrol and guarding airport, screening and searching passengers; luggage and protection of aircraft, among others.
