Rwanda to implement enhanced vehicle emissions testing starting May 2025

The Ministry of Environment, through the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), has announced the introduction of enhanced vehicle emissions testing, set to begin in May 2025. This initiative underscores Rwanda’s commitment to cleaner air, improved public health, and sustainable development.

The new system will separate emissions testing from mechanical testing while maintaining both services at the same testing locations, commonly called Contrôle Technique. Additionally, motorbikes will now be included in the emissions and mechanical testing requirements for the first time.

“This move marks a significant step forward in ensuring that all vehicles and motorbikes meet the necessary standards to protect our environment and public health,” said Juliet Kabera, Director General of REMA. “By reducing harmful emissions, we are preserving clean air for current and future generations, which is critical for sustainable development and combating climate change.”

All bookings for emissions testing will continue to be made via the Irembo platform, ensuring a seamless process for vehicle and motorbike owners.

Vehicle and motorbike owners are strongly encouraged to regularly service their machines to meet emissions standards and support Rwanda’s efforts to improve air quality.

The public is also urged to stay informed about real-time air quality levels by visiting https://aq.rema.gov.rw.

This initiative aligns with Rwanda’s broader environmental goals and demonstrates the nation’s dedication to fostering a sustainable and healthy environment for all. (End)
