The Senate of Rwanda organises field visits in all Districts and the City of Kigali to assess the implementation of the government’s measures to promote agricultural and livestock farming cooperatives. This activity for all Senators is slated from 9 to 19 January 2024.
The Senate commends the efforts made by the Government of Rwanda to promote cooperatives: The number of cooperatives increased tremendously from 919 (2005) to 10,681 (2023), share capital of cooperatives increased from 7,153,335,000 to 73,500,775,627 Rwandan francs. Currently, the cooperatives in Rwanda count 5,234,049 members.
This activity serves to further consider the implementation of the government’s measures to promote cooperatives and their contribution to the improvement of the social welfare of their members and the country’s growth in general.
Senators plan to visit 60 cooperatives countrywide, which means 2 cooperatives per district, one involved in agricultural activities and another in livestock farming. They will also visit drying shelters and warehouses to assess the post-harvest management and interact with the cooperative’s representatives and authorities on district level.
This activity of the Senate is a follow-up on previous activities conducted by the Senate aimed at supporting the measures of the Government of Rwanda to promote cooperatives. (End)
