The City of Kigali is pleased to announce that it has been selected to host the 41st General Assembly of the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF) from 18 to 22 July 2021 at the Kigali Convention Centre. This year’s AIMF General Assembly will be officially launched on the 21st July 2021 by the Prime Minister of Rwanda, Hon. Edouard Ngirente.
AIMF General Assembly is held on an annual basis to share and provide opportunity for member cities to exchange experiences and set next year plans activities.
Under the theme “The role civil society can play in improving the different governance systems within the Francophone cities and in the development of urban policies”, the four-day conference will focus on the role of Mayors in fostering social cohesion through a continuous dialogue with the civil society.
More than 130 delegations of City Mayors, local government associations and ministries from the 54 member countries of La Francophonie are expected to attend this year’s congress and will also hold bilateral meetings as well as side events organized by the standing committees and the regional networks of cities.
“The City of Kigali is happy to hold this great meeting. By having, the 41st General Assembly of the AIMF in Kigali is an indication that the AIMF and the entire Francophonie has confidence in our country and our city. It is also an opportune moment for our city to show our hospitality to all our visitors albeit the present COVID-19 situation”, said Pudence Rubingisa, Mayor of the City of Kigali.
The 41st AIMF General Assembly in Kigali follows the AIMF Bureau meeting held in Kigali in June 2019 on Cities social cohesion.
Founded in 1979, the AIMF, chaired by the Mayor of Paris, seeks to promote the vision of a city of tomorrow that brings sustainable and shared growth, placing people at the center of the urban project. Rwanda joined in 1987 initially with Kigali, Rubavu (2012), Rusizi (2015) and Nyanza (2019) as member cities. (End)
