The Non-Aligned Movement calls for solidarity and enhanced cooperation in the fight against COVID-19

The Contact Group of the Non-Aligned Movement, meeting at the level of the Summit organized by videoconference on Monday 4th May 2020, adopted a Final Declaration on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, by which the 45 participating countries, including the Kingdom of Morocco, expressed in particular their full support for the plans and initiatives of the United Nations Secretary-General to fight the Covid-19 epidemic, as well as for the role of WHO in the management of this pandemic.

The participating countries also called for the strengthening of international and regional cooperation and the reinforcement of international solidarity, while affirming their attachment to the principles of multilateralism able to provide the necessary responses to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and to guarantee economic recovery and post-pandemic social protection.

The Summit also decided to establish a “Task Force” responsible for setting up a common database on the basic medical, social and humanitarian needs of the Member States of the Non-Aligned Movement for the fight against Covid-19, in order to submit them to international organizations and to other international and regional development aid financial institutions.

The Summit chaired by H.E. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in his capacity as Chairman of the Movement, was attended by 45 countries representing the four geographical regions of the Movement.

In addition to the participation of Heads of State and Government and Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Non-Aligned Movement, this Virtual Summit was also attended by the Secretary General of the United Nations, the President of the General Assembly, the President of the African Union Commission and the Director General of WHO.

The Kingdom of Morocco was represented at this Summit by Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates. (End)
