Kigali: Rwanda National Police (RNP) has commended the public conduct during the 12th edition of Tour du Rwanda, which ended on Sunday.
While addressing thousands of cycling fans in Rebero, Kicukiro District, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Edmond Kalisa, the Deputy Central Region Police Commander noted that fans and spectators along roads were cautious, which facilitated the successful competition.
“This is the spirit of Gerayo Amahoro that’s required of everyone at all times. Where you walk, drive or ride, always remember that there are other people using the same road, so take safer decisions before crossing that road and respect every bit of road signs and rules,” CSP Kalisa said.
RNP and the Federation of Cycling in Rwanda (FERWACY) formalised partnership in Gerayo Amahoro to reinforce efforts in educating the general public on safer road usage.
Throughout the competition as cyclists traversed all regions of the country, Gerayo Amahoro messages were delivered to hundreds of spectators at finish points.
“Gerayo Amahoro campaign is designed to reach out to all Rwandans across the country, and the partnership with FERWACY through Tour du Rwanda drove the message. However, what is more important is to act on the message,” said CSP Kalisa.
“Road safety is very paramount for the social wellbeing of everyone. When walking, use the left side of the road facing the oncoming traffic, don’t use the phone when crossing, make sure motorists have given way even when using a pedestrian crosswalk, and walk fast when crossing.”
He reminded motorists to desist from reckless behaviours like using the phone, speeding, drunken-driving and violation of road traffic signs, which are the major causes of fatal accidents. (End)
