My name is Cleophas Manirakiza, 31, a Burundian refugee living in Mahama refugee camp. In 2015, my two young brothers and I fled Burundi due to insecurity and conflict that made it unsafe for us to remain there.
Leaving our home and starting over in Rwanda was difficult, but we sought safety and stability, hoping for a better future. Arriving in Rwanda provided us with a sense of security, and while it hasn’t always been easy, the journey has taught us resilience.
Growing up in a refugee camp has been a unique experience, marked by both struggles and small victories. Limited access to resources, and educational opportunities, have posed significant challenges. But I am motivated by my family, community, and the belief that, with perseverance, I can overcome these limitations and create a brighter future. My hope of making a difference and improving life for my community keeps me going.

Currently, I am involved in several activities within the camp. I run a small poultry farming business and I am working on a hydroponics project, training youth in sustainable agriculture to address food scarcity. Additionally, I am pursuing studies to enhance my skills in business management and agriculture, as well as helping train others in hydroponics – a technique of growing plants using a water-based nutrient solution rather than soil – and poultry farming.
Attending this year’s Youth Connekt Africa Summit in Kigali from 8th to 10th November 2024 in Kigali, was a transformative experience. One of the highlights was listening to President Paul Kagame share his personal journey. He spoke about how, at just four years old, he fled his homeland with his family, facing a future filled with uncertainty. But he never allowed the struggles of his early life to define him. Instead, he channelled his experiences into determination, resilience, and hope.
Hearing President Kagame recount his journey from a young refugee to the leader of a nation deeply resonated with me. As a refugee, I often face moments of doubt about my future, wondering if my dreams are even possible. But President Kagame’s story reminded me that our beginnings do not dictate our destiny. His life is proof that we can rise above adversity, make an impact, and even lead nations.
This experience has rekindled my hope and strengthened my resolve to push forward, not only for myself but for my community. His journey shows us that no matter where we come from, with resilience and commitment, we can achieve greatness.
Moving forward, I am determined to expand my agricultural projects and empower more youth in the camp. My goal is to create opportunities that benefit the entire community, while striving for personal growth and leadership that can inspire others.
In the future, I envision working on projects that address food security and economic empowerment on a larger scale, contributing not only to my community here in Mahama Refugee Camp but to the broader society as well. I want to be a positive example, showing that we can rise from difficult circumstances and help others do the same.
