During her visit to Rwanda, the WHO Africa Regional Director, Dr Moeti Matshidiso and her delegation, were briefed by Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Minister of Health, on the country’s ongoing Marburg Virus outbreak.
Minister Sabin highlighted the severe impact on the health system, particularly the tragic loss of key health workers among the first victims. He discussed the proactive steps taken by the Rwandan government, including investigations into the outbreak’s source, with results expected to be shared publicly soon. The Ministry of Health’s 4×4 strategy was identified as a focal point for collaboration with WHO.
Dr. Moeti commended Rwanda’s swift response and effective case management, noting the robust surveillance systems that enabled quick identification of the initial case. She reiterated WHO’s commitment to support Rwanda in controlling the outbreak, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced infection prevention and control (IPC) measures to safeguard health workers.
Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana shared updates on ongoing vaccination efforts for 700 frontline responders and door-to-door contact tracing initiatives aimed at containing the virus.
As both recognized the importance of integrating clinical management with surveillance, a proposal emerged: to establish a comprehensive framework for health system resilience that not only addresses current challenges but also prepares for future outbreaks. By leveraging Rwanda’s experience, this framework could serve as a model for other countries facing similar public health threats.
This collaborative approach will be essential for strengthening global health security and ensuring the safety of health workers in the fight against infectious diseases. (End)
