UN honors 313 Rwandan Police peacekeepers for excellence in CAR

On Friday, April 25, the United Nations awarded service medals to 313 Rwandan Police peacekeepers for their exceptional contributions to peace, security, and humanitarian efforts in the Central African Republic (CAR).

These peacekeepers, serving under the UN’s Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in CAR (MINUSCA), were recognized for their professionalism and integrity. The decorated officers included 140 members of the Rwanda Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU-1), 140 from the Rwanda Protection Support Unit (RWAPSU), and 33 Individual Police Officers (IPO).

The award ceremony, held at the RWAFPU-1 camp (Camp Fidèle) in Bangui, was presided over by UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Valentine Rugwabiza. The event was attended by the Ambassador of Rwanda to CAR, Olivier Kayumba, along with other key officials, representatives of contributing countries, and the local community.

In her remarks, SRSG Rugwabiza commended the peacekeepers for their unwavering commitment to MINUSCA and their exceptional conduct throughout their deployment. She specifically highlighted their critical role in protecting civilians, escorting high-level dignitaries, and conducting day-and-night patrols across Bangui.

Awarded police officers were also commended for humanitarian efforts, such as providing water to communities suffering from shortages, among other vital contributions to CAR’s stability.

Rugwabiza emphasized that the peacekeepers’ efforts go beyond typical peacekeeping duties. Their work in safeguarding local communities and supporting the delivery of essential services is integral to ensuring the success of the mission. “Today’s medal ceremony is a recognition of your dedication and selflessness,” she said, stressing the importance of their continued commitment to CAR’s peace and security.

Rwanda maintains four police contingents under MINUSCA, with units deployed in key locations across CAR. These include the RWAFPU-1 and RWAPSU in Bangui, Rwanda Formed Police Unit Two (FPU-2) in Kaga Bandoro, and Rwanda FPU-3 in Bangassou. (End)
