John Legend paid respects to the victims of Genocide against the Tutsi

American singer, songwriter, and pianist John Legend visited this Monday  February 24 the Kigali Genocide Memorial and paid respects to the victims of Genocide against the Tutsi.

John Legend laid a wreath at the burial place where 250,000 victims of the genocide are laid to rest and observed a minute of silence in their honour.

Guided through the museum, John Legend had an opportunity to learn more about the history of the genocide, from the colonial roots of ethnic division through to the horrors of the killings, and gain insights on Rwanda’s journey to foster a shared sense of national identity.

John Legend described the memorial as important in teaching about Rwandan history and giving hope.

“We were sad, we were crying, we were angry, we were heartbroken. But we were also educated…. We can do better through learning from the past. I believe that humans have the potential to be so loving and learn how to live together in peace”, John Legend wrote in the Memorial’s guestbook.

EGOT winner John Legend performed in Kigali on February 21, 2025 where he headlined the second edition of Move Afrika Concert, marking his first-ever performance in East Africa.

EGOT, an acronym for the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards, is the designation given to people who have won all four of the major performing art awards in the United States of America. (End)
