Rwandan surgeons at King Faisal Hospital (KFH) with a visiting team of American surgeons successfully performed three living donor kidney transplantations this week.
The launch of this service is in line with the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce costly medical referrals abroad. Over the past seven years, 67 Rwandan patients have been transferred abroad for kidney transplants, costing approximately 900 million Frw.
According to the Ministry of Health, the program will continue to run on a monthly basis, with the visiting surgical team working alongside the KFH team for the next two years, when local specialists will independently manage this complex care.
KFH also operates subspecialty fellowship programs through the University of Rwanda’s School of Medicine and Pharmacy, including in nephrology and renal transplant surgery, which aims to increase health professionals in highly specialized areas.
King Faisal Hospital is a multi-specialist quaternary hospital dedicated to providing excellent medical service in Rwanda and the region. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, a highly skilled medical team, and a patient-centered approach, the hospital offers a comprehensive range of specialised medical services and strives to improve health and well-being.
The leadership at King Faisal Hospital thanks the Government of Rwanda for the extensive support that it gives to the health sector and for making this significant undertaking possible. (End)
