Senators commit to further engage with citizens

At the conclusion of their two-day retreat, the Senators reiterated their commitment to improve their engagement with citizens to gain a better understanding of the issues affecting their livelihoods.

They also reaffirmed their role as a think tank focused on addressing the country’s pressing challenges, aiming to achieve the objectives outlined in the Second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) through Senate activities among others.

In his closing remarks, the Right Honorable President of the Senate, Kalinda François Xavier, emphasized that the retreat provided a valuable opportunity for self-reflection, fostering hope and the strength to collaborate effectively. He stressed that the resolutions made during the retreat are vows that Senators must fulfill.

Throughout the retreat, Senators reflected on their responsibilities and discussed the Senate’s implementation of these duties, as well as its collaboration with other institutions for the benefit of the citizens.

Key discussion points included:

1. The genesis of the Senate and the expectations citizens have of Senators.

3. The Second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), the government’s five-year program (2024-2029).

4. The vision and strategies for the Senate during its fourth term.

The first day’s session concentrated on the reasons behind the establishment of the Senate, citizens’ expectations, and the execution of its responsibilities.

In his address, Tito Rutaremara explained that the Senate was established as the highest authority responsible for monitoring the application of fundamental principles and overseeing the functioning of political organizations.

He encouraged Senators to engage more with citizens and assist them in addressing their concerns.
